Race Track

Having hosted the 1948 Winter Olympics and five World Ski Championships, St. Moritz's local mountain, Corviglia, has also secured its place on the calendars of the Women's Ski World Cup and the Europa Cup. The two attractive tracks, 'Engiadina' and 'Corviglia', require the athletes to give their all and promise top-class racing.

The «Corviglia»

This year, the races will take place on Corviglia. The women's start of the Britannia downhill run is located above the Munt da San Murezzan mountain station at 2,745 metres above sea level. The course then follows the Salastrains chairlift and passes the Super-G start at 2,590 metres above sea level. After the Berthod-edge, the upper section of the course leads through the key sections of Lanigiro, Mauritius-Hang and the triple curve ‘Panorama’ around the 'wall' before the athletes enter the Weisse Band (white band). After Alp Giop, the course heads towards Romingersprung, where jumps of up to 50 metres are possible. Finally, it speeds over the Lärchenpassage (larch passage) into the Salastrains finish area.

The race track

All five alpine disciplines can be raced on the Corviglia slope, which has all the necessary homologations for events ranging from downhill and slalom to parallel. Another unique feature is that the two standard slopes (Corviglia and Engiadina) can be combined to allow for a variety of options depending on the situation and requirements.

Engiadina

At 2,745 metres above sea level, the women's downhill start has been named 'Britannia' in honour of the British pioneers who established winter sports in St. Moritz 150 years ago. It propels the athletes onto the picturesque 2.5 km Engadin downhill run. The start slope is around 100 metres long, and athletes will reach speeds of around 100 km/h at the exit. After a short undulating gliding section, the Suvretta edge follows. This is where the Super-G starts. There is constantly changing terrain here, as well as long jumps, hollows and crests over 'Muot Alpina', 'Foppa + Gianda' and the 'Grosses Loch' (big hole) into the 'Weisse Band' (white band). The course then continues with long turns to Alp Giop, passing the 'Reinaltersprung' (Reinalter-jump) and going through the 'Engnis' to the Salstrains finish area. This challenging course demands the utmost concentration and fitness from the world's best female downhill skiers.

Corviglia

Athletes starting at the ‘free-fall’ at 2.840 m.a.s.l. speed up to around 100 km/h within four seconds. After 130 metres, they reach 130 km/h. This speed must be skilfully controlled over the entire length of the 3-kilometre-long slope. Once the professional has completed the start slope, more adrenaline-fuelled moments follow on the striking descent, which lasts approximately 1 minute and 40 seconds in total. For around a tenth of this time, they are in the air, covering a distance of around 300 metres. The most striking sections in the upper part of the course are ‘Cürva’, followed by ‘Lanigiro’, ‘Mauritius’ and ‘Mauer’. With their thighs already burning, the racers then tackle the key ‘Felsen’ section and the two big ‘Rominger’ and ‘Lärchen’ jumps before zooming over the finish line.
